FIRESTARTERS Mining Laser: Hold Still vs Slow Burn

Understand the difference between direct beam kills and fire-damage kills in the Mining Laser's two official Steam achievement conditions.

What is the difference between the two Laser achievements?

The official Steam conditions distinguish the damage responsible for the kill. Hold Still requires the Mining Laser’s direct beam to kill an enemy. Slow Burn requires its fire damage to do so. Merely using the Laser at some point in a fight is not the full listed condition.

Target What must finish the enemy
Hold Still Direct damage from the Mining Laser beam
Slow Burn Fire damage associated with the Mining Laser

How can you make your practice easier to interpret?

Work on one target condition at a time. For a direct-beam attempt, avoid confusing the result with a final hit from another weapon. For a fire-damage attempt, the goal is the fire finishing the enemy, not simply seeing a burning effect before some other source lands the kill.

Should you confuse this with a multiweapon combo?

No. Multiweapon achievements ask how many different weapons you use against the same enemy. The Laser achievements ask which damage causes that enemy’s death. These are separate checks, so decide which one you are practising before mixing several weapons into the encounter.

The distinction is useful when looking at parry and combo targets: a multiweapon task and a rapid multikill are also different from one another. For other weapon-specific conditions, consult the Railgun guide and Shotgun and Rocket Launcher page.

Use the achievement checklist to record your remaining goals. It lists requirements rather than implying that every condition has a tested route on this site.

Official conditions checked November 2, 2026. No firsthand weapon testing, heat values, upgrade recommendations, or guaranteed unlock method is claimed.
