FIRESTARTERS Audio Startup Crash and No-Sound Checks

Check the documented exclusive-audio startup failure, the October 31 fallback behavior, and what to report if the game launches without sound.

Can another audio application prevent the game from launching?

A player’s detailed report described that situation with a playback device in exclusive use. The developer acknowledged the diagnosis and offered a debug build that could continue without audio. The October 31 release notes separately document the audio-initialization startup fix.

That is a specific known case, not a reason to assume every startup failure comes from a music player or audio driver. Identify the failing system from the error and log when possible.

What changed in the October 31 update?

The developer says the engine tries other available devices when it cannot initialize the default playback device. If none succeeds, the game can still start, but without audio. A game window appearing after the patch can therefore be consistent with an unresolved playback-device problem rather than evidence that sound should already be working.

The notes discuss possible future improvements to reinitialization. They do not promise that switching devices during a running session will always reconnect sound immediately.

What should you check in a controlled retry?

After updating, note the default Windows playback device and whether another application uses it exclusively. Temporarily close that application or try another default output, then relaunch and compare the result. The original reporter described changing the default device as a workaround; treat that as a case-specific diagnostic test rather than a guaranteed permanent fix.

Keep the test reversible: make one change, launch once, and record whether the game starts and whether sound works. Avoid changing several audio settings simultaneously, which makes the result difficult to explain.

What should you send if the problem remains?

Send the relevant log and a short description of your playback device, the other audio software involved, and the result of the controlled retry. The developer specifically requested information about programs holding the device exclusively. Use the log-location instructions to find the release files.

If the log instead reports a suitable-GPU failure, follow the GPU guide. If audio works but you are adjusting frame behavior, the VSync and frame-limit page covers a separate setting choice.
